Did you know that the distribution of beech forests (Fagus sylvatica) is limited to the European continent? However, human intervention has dramatically reduced the coverage of ancient and primeval beech forests, which have become rare today. To help protect these unique ecosystems, the UNESCO designated some of these forests as serial transnational Natural World Heritage. A transboundary forest ‘complex’ called ‘The Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and other Regions of Europe’ stretches over 18 European countries. A selection of these unique and valuable beech forests are recognised by UNESCO as the natural World Heritage with 94 component parts. But, in order to ensure an effective protection in such a complex transnational site, strong cooperation beyond borders is essential.
The BEECH POWER project aims support this by establishing a cooperation platform and harmonizing the management and conservation measures across sites and regions. However, the key to achieve a successful and long-term protection is its community-based approach, with a focus on young generations. The project recognizes the important role that local communities play in the conservation of beech forests and empowers them to actively participate in the development of strategies to boost an ecosystem-based sustainable regional development.
As a celebration of the last three years of cooperation, the BEECH POWER partnership will hold the project final conference titled “A Day at the BEECH” on the 29th of March, 2022 in online format.
We will present the key achievements and lessons learnt from the BEECH POWER project. Representatives from the project partners, together with other experts working in the field of old-growth forest conservation will present the outcomes of the cooperation within the project, exchange knowledge and experiences. Participants will also discuss the future of World Heritage Beech Forests and their communities.
